Why Do Clear Cases Turn Yellow? Can You Clean a Yellowed Case? — Capes

Almost everyone who has owned a transparent cover knows the moment: the case that looked invisible on day one now looks tea-stained, and the phone underneath looks older than it is. Some of that colour is dirt you can wash off. Some of it is the plastic itself changing, and that part is permanent.

This guide explains why clear cases yellow, how to tell grime from real yellowing, how to clean a transparent phone case safely at home, and how to pick a case that stays clear for longer.

Why do clear cases turn yellow?

Clear cases yellow because light, heat and oxygen break down the plastic over time, and the broken-down material absorbs blue light, which makes it look yellow. Four things speed it up:

• UV light. Sunlight is the biggest cause. Ultraviolet rays break bonds in the plastic, and oxygen reacts with the damaged parts. Most standard clear TPU is made with aromatic compounds that are especially prone to this; aliphatic (anti-yellow) grades resist it but cost more.
• Heat. Heat speeds up the same reactions. A phone left on a car dashboard, a window sill or used for long gaming sessions in an Indian summer ages its case faster.
• Skin oil, sweat, sunscreen and lotions. These sit on the surface, collect dust and darken it. Soft TPU also absorbs some of them.
• Age. Even a case kept in a drawer slowly changes colour. Light and heat just make it happen sooner.

Material matters most. Soft, flexible clear TPU can start yellowing within months. Rigid polycarbonate (PC) yellows much more slowly, and anti-yellow treatments slow it further. We compare the materials in detail in TPU vs TPE vs Polycarbonate.

Is it dirt or real yellowing? How to tell

If the colour is patchy and darkest at the corners, edges and cut-outs, it is mostly grime and will wash off. If the whole case has an even yellow tint, including the inside, the plastic itself has yellowed.

How do I clean a transparent phone case at home?

Take the case off and wash it with warm water and a few drops of dish soap, using a soft toothbrush for the corners. That removes surface grime from any clear case.

1. Remove the case from the phone. Never clean it while it is on the phone.
2. Mix warm (not hot) water with a few drops of dish soap in a bowl.
3. Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush or microfibre cloth, paying attention to the corners, button holes and camera cut-out where grime collects.
4. For stubborn stains on a soft TPU case, make a paste of baking soda and a little water, rub it in gently, then rinse. Skip this on hard polycarbonate cases: abrasive pastes can leave fine marks on a glossy hard surface.
5. Rinse with clean water and dry with a lint-free cloth.
6. Let it dry completely, including around the magnet ring on a MagSafe case, and wipe the back of the phone before putting the case back on.

Avoid: bleach, nail polish remover (acetone), kitchen degreasers, boiling water and the dishwasher. They can cloud, warp or weaken the plastic without removing yellowing.

Toothpaste is often suggested. It is mildly abrasive, so it can lift grime from a soft case, but it does nothing for UV yellowing and can dull a glossy hard case.

Can you make a yellowed case clear again?

No. Once the plastic itself has yellowed, cleaning cannot reverse it. Soap, baking soda and toothpaste only remove what sits on the surface.

Internet tricks like soaking the case in bleach or hydrogen peroxide can lighten it slightly at best, and they risk making the plastic cloudy or brittle. We don't recommend them. If an even yellow tint remains after a proper wash, the case has reached the end of its clear life.

How do I stop a clear case from turning yellow?

Choose the right material first, then keep the case out of heat and sun and clean it regularly.

• Keep the phone out of direct sun and off the car dashboard.
• Wash your hands after sunscreen or lotion before handling the phone.
• Wipe the case weekly and give it a proper wash every few weeks, so grime never builds up.

Which clear case doesn't turn yellow?
