In recent times, skins and vinyl wraps are becoming extremely popular among smartphone users. People are giving up on bulkier hard-bound cases and are switching to skins to cover up their phones. Skins are precisely cut self-adhesive sheets to fit the exact dimensions of the device which can protect your device from scratches and fingerprints. The question that must now be asked is, “Why go for skins over a hardbound case?”. So, everything depends on the user's decision. Hard-bound cases are preferred for added protection against damage, while skins are better suited if you want to maintain your phone's slim profile and to protect against minor scratches that occur from regular use. So, let’s get into the details of why skins are now an alternative to hard-bound cases.

People have now become more careful in handling their phones and even the quality of smartphone material has improved over the years to provide better protection against drops and falls. Smartphone manufacturers have started using gorilla glass, aluminium, carbon fiber, and ceramic in smartphones to improve durability and impact resistance to reduce the likelihood of damage from drops. As a result, people opt against using bulkier hard bound cases that barely fit in their hands.

Neither hard-bound cases nor skins can protect the screen of your smartphone. Even good quality, expensive phone cases do not guarantee screen protection. Hard cases and skins can offer some degree of protection for the back and sides of your smartphone, but they might not be enough to prevent damage to the screen. So, in terms of protecting the screen always consider a screen protector with skins or phone cases.

Hard bound cases can eventually damage your smartphone. One of the most common issues that most smartphone users might have experienced is overheating their devices. What do you do then? You remove the back cover. When a phone is in use, its processor produces heat and to prevent overheating the phone’s internal components have a mechanism to dissipate this heat. But, if the phone's back cover prevents this heat from escaping effectively, it may build up and overheat causing damage to the internal components, reducing battery life, or in some circumstances, even a safety risk. Dust is yet another issue with hard-bound cases. Dust and other debris accumulate between the case and the phone and easily damages the paint, causing scratches and leaving stains that are hard to remove. Skins, on the other hand, do not experience these problems. Skins do not obstruct heat dissipation and they do not leave any room for dust to get accumulated.

Skins and vinyl wraps provide a moderate level of protection against scratches, scuffs, and minor damages. Unlike hardbound covers, skins may not be as effective against drops but they still provide a significant amount of protection for those who handle their device carefully.

Skins are now also being used to cover the broken back glass of smartphones. This is a cheap and effective solution to your phone’s broken back glass. Just slap on a skin that covers the cracks, and you are good to go. You can also use skins to cover up the old faded or scratched body of your phone and it will make your phone look brand new.

Another reason why smartphone users are choosing skins over cases is that skins offer a wide range of varieties and give options to choose colours, textures, and designs. You can customize the skin and decide whether you want skin for the body, frame, camera, lens, or any combination of these. This way, you can personalize your phone and make it fancier.

Skins are easier to maintain too. Oil marks, smudges, dirt, and dust accumulated on the phone’s skin can be cleaned very easily using a microfiber cloth or by just using a moist cloth. Custom-cut designs have made it effortless to apply, remove and replace skins.

Hardbound covers will provide the proper level of protection, but skins are better suited to complement your phone's sleek design and protect it from minor scratches that occur from regular use. If you're sure of yourself, you never drop your phone, and you like stylish, minimalist designs, then the skin is the perfect option for you because of all the advantages it has to offer over covers. For those who value style and minimalism more than maximum protection, skins are a fantastic option. Hard bound cases provide a higher level of protection, but they can be bulky and weigh down your device unnecessarily. Skins, on the other hand, are incredibly light and thin, giving you a streamlined appearance without adding bulk. Furthermore, skins are customizable, allowing you to select a pattern or colour that complements your individual sense of style. Therefore, skins are definitely something to think about if you're looking for a simple, fashionable option to protect your device from scratches and scuffs.
