Quick answer: "Scratchgate" is the name for September 2025 reports that the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max scuff easily. Store demo marks were mostly residue from worn MagSafe stands. Real wear shows on the aluminium body, worst at the sharp camera plateau edge. It is cosmetic. A case with a raised camera surround protects that edge; a skin protects the back.
The iPhone 17 Pro moved from titanium to an aluminium unibody, and within days of launch, photos of scuffed phones were everywhere. A year on, the searches haven't stopped: "does the iPhone 17 Pro scratch easily", "scratches around the camera", "scratches even with a case". Here is what actually happens, what Apple said, and what protects the phone.
What is iPhone 17 Pro scratchgate?
Scratchgate covers two separate things: marks on store display units, and genuine scuffs on owners' phones, mainly around the camera plateau.

Why does the iPhone 17 Pro scratch?
The body is anodised aluminium, and the anodised layer is hard but brittle. On flat surfaces it takes only shallow marks. On a sharp corner, like the edge of the camera plateau, the coating does not bond as evenly, so a knock can chip it and show bare metal.
That is why the worst damage in teardown tests and owner photos is at the plateau edges, not the flat middle of the back. Part of the back is a Ceramic Shield glass panel, which behaves differently from the aluminium around it.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses the same design and materials, so everything here applies to it too.
Can an iPhone 17 Pro scratch inside a case?
A case stops almost all direct contact, but fine sand and dust can get between the case and the phone and rub as it moves. Take the case off every couple of weeks, wipe the phone and the inside of the case, and the problem goes away.
The same goes for MagSafe chargers, wallets and mounts: wipe the contact surfaces before snapping them on, since grit trapped under a magnet is exactly what marked the store demo phones.
What is the best case for an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max?
Pick a case whose raised edge surrounds the whole camera plateau, so the plateau edges are covered and the lenses never touch the table. Then choose between maximum protection and a clear look.

Should I use a skin or a case on the iPhone 17 Pro?
Use a case if you are worried about the plateau edges and drops. Use a skin if you want the phone slim and mainly want to stop everyday scuffs on the back.
A full-body skin covers the aluminium back and the top of the camera plateau, with cut-outs for the lenses, so keys, coins and table tops hit vinyl instead of the anodised finish. It adds no bulk and works with MagSafe. It does not protect against drops, and for the sharp outer edge of the plateau a raised case surround is the surer protection.
Pro Max owners: see iPhone 17 Pro Max skins. To keep the original colour on show, choose the matte transparent iPhone skin. For the full comparison, read skin vs back cover.
How do I prevent iPhone 17 Pro scratches day to day?
- Keep it away from keys and coins in your pocket or bag.
- Don't slide it camera-down on rough tables or stone counters.
- Wipe MagSafe accessories and the phone before attaching them.
- Clean under the case every couple of weeks.
- Use a screen protector if micro-scratches on the display bother you.

FAQ
Is iPhone 17 Pro scratchgate real?
Partly. The ring marks on store demo phones were mostly residue from worn MagSafe stands that can be cleaned off. But the anodised aluminium, especially the sharp camera plateau edge, can genuinely scuff and chip with everyday knocks. It is a cosmetic issue, not a functional one.
iPhone 17 Pro par scratch kyun aate hain?
iPhone 17 Pro ki body anodised aluminium ki hai. Flat jagah par sirf halke scratch aate hain, lekin camera plateau ke tez kinaare par coating patli hoti hai, isliye wahan jaldi chip ho jati hai. Raised camera edge wala case ya skin lagane se ye bach jata hai.
Does the iPhone 17 Pro Max scratch as easily?
Yes. The Pro Max uses the same aluminium unibody and camera plateau design, so the plateau edges are the weak spot on both.
Can scratches on an iPhone 17 Pro be removed?
Marks left by MagSafe stands and other surfaces can often be wiped off. Real scratches or chips in the anodised aluminium cannot be polished away at home, so protecting the phone early matters.
Does a skin or case affect MagSafe on the iPhone 17 Pro?
No. Capes iPhone 17 Pro skins work with MagSafe and wireless charging, and Impact Armour Pro and Clear Armour have N52 magnets built in for MagSafe chargers, wallets and mounts.
