The phone falling off the mount on a speed breaker is the complaint we hear most about car holders. It almost always comes down to three things: the type of holder, what is between the magnet and the phone, and where the holder is mounted. This guide covers all three, plus what Apple actually says about magnets near an iPhone.

Which is better: a magnetic or a clamp car phone holder?

A magnetic holder is faster to use and works for any phone size; a clamp holder needs no magnet on the phone. Here is how the two compare in daily driving.

If you change phones often or share the car with people who use very different phones, a clamp is the no-setup option. If you use one phone and get in and out of the car many times a day, a magnetic holder saves the most effort.

Is a magnetic car mount safe for my phone?

Yes, for the phone itself. Apple has built a ring of magnets into every iPhone since the iPhone 12 so that MagSafe chargers, wallets and mounts can attach. The cautions on Apple's support pages are about other things that sit near magnets:

• Cards and key fobs: Apple says not to place credit cards, security badges, passports or key fobs between the iPhone and a MagSafe charger, because this may damage magnetic strips or RFID chips. Don't keep cards in a phone-case pocket that sits against the mount.
• Medical devices: Apple's medical-device page notes that most manufacturers recommend keeping a source of possible interference at least 15 cm away. If you use a pacemaker or similar device, ask your doctor before mounting a magnetic holder near you.
• Strong vibration (two-wheelers): Apple warns that high-amplitude vibration, such as from high-power motorcycle engines, can affect the iPhone camera's stabilisation and autofocus. It does not recommend attaching an iPhone to high-power motorcycles, and recommends a vibration-dampening mount on mopeds and scooters. Our MagLock mounts are made for cars, not bikes.

On Android, a magnetic ring is a passive metal-and-magnet plate stuck to the back of the phone or case. Before you stick it, check where your phone's wireless-charging coil and tap-to-pay area are: anything metal over those spots can get in the way of wireless charging or contactless payments.

Will my phone fall off a magnetic mount on bumpy roads?

Not if the magnets on both sides are strong and nothing thick sits between them. Phones fall off when the hold is weakened, usually by one of these:

• A case without magnets. A regular case adds distance between the mount and the iPhone's magnets. Use a MagSafe case with its own magnets; our Clear Armour cases have N52 magnets built in.
• A ring in the wrong place. On Android, stick the ring centred on the back so the phone's weight is balanced. A ring placed low lets the top of the phone lever away on bumps.
• Extra weight. A wallet, grip or power bank stacked on the back moves the phone further from the mount.
• A loose base. A vent clip on a flimsy vent slat, or a suction cup on a textured dashboard, will move even when the magnet holds. The base matters as much as the magnet.

Air vent or dashboard: where should I put the car phone holder?

Put it where you can glance at the screen without looking away from the road, and where it never blocks your view or an airbag. Then pick the base that suits that spot.

• Air vent: keeps the phone at eye level close to the steering wheel and needs no adhesive. It needs firm vent slats. If the heater is on, that air blows straight onto the phone.
• Dashboard (suction): lets you choose the exact position. Suction needs a flat, smooth, non-porous surface; heavily textured or soft-touch dashboards don't give it a seal.
• Keep clear of airbags: never mount anything on or in front of an airbag cover. Your car's owner's manual shows where the airbags deploy.

Does a magnetic holder work with a case or an Android phone?

Yes, with the right case or a magnetic ring.

• iPhone 12 or later, no case or a MagSafe case: snaps straight on.
• iPhone with a regular (non-magnetic) case: stick a magnetic ring on the outside of the case, or switch to a MagSafe case.
• Android phone: stick a magnetic ring on the phone or, better, on its case so the phone stays clean when the case comes off. Some Android cases, such as our Clear Armour for the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, have magnets built in.
• iPhone 11 or older: these have no MagSafe magnets, so treat them like an Android phone: a ring or a magnetic case.
